Jan asked me more about what viewers didn’t see, specifically with respect to my relationship with Acie. Besides talking about the issues I covered in my previous blog posts (“What happened”, “Online Dating and Commitment”, and “Pressures of Dating on TV”) she asked me about what happened at the black tie party with Acie. Many people have also been asking me about this as well.
Going to the party, Acie asked that we not film there. These were his close friends and he simply wanted to enjoy the annual holiday party. I supported his need for “time off” from the camera, particularly because he had been soooo accommodating the entire time ABC NEWS had been following us. My cameraperson wholeheartedly agreed and compromised by only filming the first and last several minutes- he cut off the camera for the majority of the time we were there (although, of course he stayed). As a result, much of what happened at the party was not captured. As shown in the last episode, Acie spent the party with his buddies. I didn’t mind mingling without him for a while- not an issue. The issue came when this lasted for a few hours. Everyone at the party knew each other and I only knew Acie. I was also in a situation where the people around me were engaging in things that were making me extremely uncomfortable. I have traveled to many countries and have been in situations ranging from being propositioned by a swinging couple at an exclusive Sky Bar party (at the Mondrian) in LA to being at a party in Thailand where it was raided and shut down by the police (for what I still don’t know- I couldn’t speak Thai). However I was caught off guard with what was going on at this party given that it was a crowd of professional thirty somethings at a formal affair. I am not going to publicize details about what happened at someone’s private house, but in the most general of terms, I seemed to be the only person there that felt strange about what was going down- and that was what was even more disconcerting.
Clearly this was a final indicator that we were incompatible. Our social lives were so distinctly different that as a couple, it was bound to become a problem.
Ok, so I think that this should be the final blog post about Acie. I still need to answer your questions about the overall experience of taping Hooking Up, online dating, relationship etiquette, the dates with men that you didn’t see,…… and I would like to get around to sharing more about me and what is going on with me NOW! Whew!
I am looking forward to tonight's final Hooking Up episode. Post your comments about the show here. I will respond with my thoughts regarding the show tomorrow!
