Cover for Cheating Spouse?

I have been in the heart of Texas for a while working on a project for my customer. While here, I met a gentleman at an event I attended. Since I have been away from home, I have been looking to just engage with someone other than the people I see at work. This guy caught my attention. I knew from the start that he wasn’t someone with whom I was looking to develop a relationship but he was the best thing going on. When he told me that he was an engineer and a Naval Officer, I felt like it was deja vu (with respect to my experience on the show “Hooking Up”).

So, we danced…and it felt good to dance off camera by the way. We had a great time that evening. As we talked, I asked him if he had kids. He said he has one pre-teen. I asked if he had been married before. He said he got married at a young age. The crunk music came back on and we hit the dance floor again. It was hot and sweaty- and I loved it! The folks there didn’t act like they were too cute to dance, unlike some of my fellow New York City Buppies.

As I was admiring his tall, slim build, and his boots that matched the color of mine, we began to touch hands. Later in the evening, I asked, “You don’t have a girlfriend do you? I don’t want to violate somebody’s man.” He replied “No.” By the end of the evening, he had taken my phone number and programmed it in his phone.

A few days went by and he had not called. Bored one day, I did an internet search on him. It is always fun to see what comes up- like high school reunion pictures, etc. Well, I didn’t expect to find a profile on him that ended with a sentence that named his wife.

The profile was only a year old. I felt that there was a slim chance that he could have been divorced - but I was not going to be surprised if he turned out to still be married.

He ended up calling the next day and simply saying, "You might be receiving a call from someone. Someone got a hold of my phone." I asked, “Would that someone be your wife?” He replied, “Yes, on paper. We are going through some things and a man just got caught up. You know how that is.” I said, “No, I don’t.” He then went on to ask if I could cover for him if his wife calls- to say that I know him from work or school or something.

I know my story is not unique. I want to hear your thoughts on how I or someone in my situation should handle the call. Or maybe how you, as a man or woman, have handled it before.
