The proverbial question

Have you been contacted by a lot of men that have seen you on Hooking Up?- This is the question that everyone has been asking me since the last episode aired. icon_question

REPLY: No. Since my first episode on Hooking Up, I have only had one man (that didn’t know me through a friend) see me on the show and then contact me online. Let me first say that this is not of much concern to me. My motive for agreeing to be filmed for the documentary had nothing to do with having more visibility in order to gain more male suitors. I actually laugh every time a friend or relative says, “Oh, this is going to be so good for you, lots of guys are going to contact you because of the show”. Truthfully, with online dating, lots of guys contacted me prior to the show. My online dating profile was viewed over 11,000 times in less than a year. I only say this to explain the dynamics of online dating- many women and men share this same experience, mine is not unique. Also, online dating is only one venue for dating. There are many ways in which I meet potential suitors. In the past year or two, I have really learned to focus less on looking for someone and more on enjoying being single. Sometimes we forget how precious single life is and that we should cherish the time that we have to ourselves….now….while we still have it. (More on this subject in an upcoming blog post.)

I wanted to mention that I don’t think many men are watching Hooking Up (hence the low response rate). We are losing in the Nielsen Ratings to CSI (reruns) and Law Firm. Also, it was really marketed to women as a real life “Sex in the City”. So maybe I might wonder about a man that contacted me because he was tuned into the show- unless of course he was told by a friend to watch for me or was channel surfing and became interested in my story. icon_wink
