At first I was a bit shy about being a stickler about asking for an additional photo, but I learned quickly. The problem with one picture is that it may be a freak accident that this person happened to look that good. We all have that one picture that we look at and say. “Wow that looks really good- doesn’t even really look like me!” Well, you better believe that people are posting their “wow” picture as the main photo. Who would blame them? However, I feel that it is deceptive when that person knows that they really don’t look like that “on the regular.”
So, I insist on a second photo. This photo must be a full-length shot and I always ask them if it is recent. Of course someone could lie, but I have found that people tend to ‘fess up at this point. In their mind, they felt like at least they had a chance because contact was made and they know that if you meet them, their cover will be blown anyway. In these cases, it is too late for that person because false advertising- the bait and switch- wastes my time and I don’t care to continue.
Here is one of the photos that I used in my online dating profile. Obviously it is not a glamour shot. I wanted to show that I enjoy being active and have some fun. It also gives the other person something to talk about- like "Where were you? Were you skiing or skydiving?" Also I want to attract someone that is active, so it sends an unspoken message that clearly I would want my mate to engage in these types of activities.
Steer clear of professional photos when everyday snapshots aren’t included in the photo album as well. It is bad news.
Whenever possible- do webcam! Ask the person to stand up. This way you will absolutely know what you are getting! (Besides height, which is really hard to judge on webcam.)
