I am finally back from the middle of nowhere in Texas. There were no cool lounge spots where I was. Just cows, horses and lots of land- and night clubs inside of bar-b-que joints. My coworker had been to a few of the night clubs in town and literally dragged me out to the bar-b-que club during my last week there. I couldn’t believe that the place was actually deemed the hottest club in town. Even more, I couldn’t believe that the bouncer acted like there was a red velvet rope. When I was in line, he was being so called “selective” and turned away some people at the door- including me.
You know, I guess everything is relative. In the big cities, the bouncers want the “pretty” people in the club no matter how obnoxious they are- actually being more obnoxious gets you in faster in most cases. In the little towns, it is all about making the bouncer feel like the “big man” in town. I say this because this bouncer had an issue with anyone who questioned him- even if done so nicely. The problem started when the bouncer told my male coworker that his hat was not allowed. When I tried to put the hat in my purse, the bouncer said that it must go in the car. So, while I was waiting for my coworker to get back from putting his hat in his vehicle (really I knew he was around the corner shoving it in his back pocket), I asked a security guard whether someone would have not allowed the hat in if it were in my purse in the first place when we arrived but was found when I was searched at the door. The security guard started to answer me when I was interrupted by the bouncer telling me, “You can go on and call it a night.” (Pointing toward the parking lot- basically telling me to ‘step’.) I didn’t know what on earth he was talking about but he kept repeating himself.
When my coworker got back and he tried to get in, the bouncer said he could not go in if he was with me. I couldn’t believe it. All of this for a club inside of a bar-b-que joint in the middle of nowhere??? My coworker had arranged to hook up with a female in the club that night so he was very intent on getting in. He found another guy working the door, exchanged some words, and then we were allowed in. A few minutes later, my coworker pulled his hat out and put it back on.
Everyone wants to be important- whether in the big city or a small town. The experience showed me that people are the same wherever you go- everyone has nonsense to deal with, it just comes in different forms. You can’t blame it on the “big city” and you can’t escape it by going to a small town.
