When a friend told me about Harriet's they said that they might be too funky for me. Seeing me as a standard professional, he thought I would probably shy away from some of the styles for want of something a little more mainstream or conservative. However, in the end, I was hooked!
Clients include India Arie, Talib Kweli, M.I.A, Mos Def, BET and Yerba Buena.
Two women run the store but everyone that works there are designers that are selling their fashions on the rack also. I see it as more than a store but a collaboration of Black designers.
When I walked in, it felt like I was immediately part of a family. As I browsed I met Hekima. She was in an open area toward the back sewing and designing one of her next creations. She took the time to stop and chat with me about my challenges with my wardrobe. Soon, the other ladies there joined in. It was like I found a new sisterhood.
I found that many of the styles did indeed work with my personality. They opened me up to looks that I had not yet discovered. People that are fashion conservatives can pair pieces that are really funky with a more traditional piece to add a punch of flair that really defines an outfit. Since everything there is made by hand, you are guaranteed to have a unique piece.
They also sell men’s clothes.
Each time I wear one of their pieces, I get a flood of compliments. So, as you can guess, I am a regular there now. Sometimes I just like to stop by and hang out.
